12 Session Myofunctional Therapy Treatment Program
All ages
I typically recommend a 12-session therapy program for my patients at Reno Tahoe Myo.
During therapy, you’ll work through a carefully structured program tailored to your needs, with each session progressively building on the one before it. The program starts with improving oral and facial muscle strength, and then works through swallowing, eating, speech, tongue-tie or sleep apnea exercises, depending on your symptoms.
These 12-session therapy programs usually last about eight to ten months. The appointments are held in person at Reno Tahoe Myo or via TeleHealth and our online patient portal. You will meet with me for a 30-45 minute session every two to three weeks.
The daily time commitment for your exercises is simple – five minutes, twice day is all it takes!
The 12-session programs in personalized and effective so you can learn exercises and techniques that will help you to permanently change your oral myofunctional habits for the better.
F.A.Q’s

Why is Mouth Breathing bad?
Breathing through the nose is the way we’re meant to breathe. It’s good for us on so many levels. Mouth breathing can cause a range of symptoms that affect all parts of our body from our teeth and facial structure to our digestive system, so it’s definitely something worth changing.
Here are some of the symptoms of mouth breathing.
- Small lower jaw or underbite
- Narrow long face
- Droopy eyes and mouth
- Flat facial features
- Bad breath
- Dental decay and gum disease
- Stomach pain, gas and digestive problems
- Snoring and sleep disordered breathing
- A longer time in braces
- Orthodontic relapse after braces are removed
- Hyperactivity and trouble focusing for children
- Chronic fatigue and daytime sleepiness in adults
What is a low resting tongue posture?
Your tongue provides a support structure for your jaw. The tongue should rest in the top of your mouth all the way from the tip to the very back. When it doesn’t, and instead is low on the floor of the mouth, this is called a low resting tongue or low resting tongue posture. This is a sign that myofunctional therapists pay close attention to.
Can Myofunctional Therapy help with snoring?
Yes. Mouth breathing and snoring go hand in hand. If you can learn to breathe through your nose during the night, and strengthen the muscles in your throat, then you will snore less. Myofunctional therapy exercises have been shown to be helpful with other types of sleep disordered breathing (like sleep apnea and UARS) as well.
Can Myofunctional Therapy help with TMJ pain or disorders?
Yes, TMJ pain is a main reason why patients seek out myofunctional therapy. The TMJ joint or, jaw joint, is very complex and meant to last us a lifetime. Unfortunately, if our facial muscles aren’t working in correct function we can experience pain and deterioration of the jaw joint over time. Here are some of the causes of TMJ issues.
- Genetics
- Epigenetic changes
- Trauma
- Age-related degeneration
- Autoimmune conditions such as arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Nutritional and dietary issues
- Chronic stress
- Postural and structural issues
- Tongue-tie
- Teeth clenching and grinding
- Improper chewing or swallowing patterns
- Incorrect tongue resting posture and mouth breathing
- Malocclusion
- Persistently sleeping on one side
Myofunctional therapy will help to get the muscles of the face and jaw back in correct function so that pain can decrease.
I will work closely with my team of other specialist so that you can get the best treatment to lead you out of pain. Often times treating TMJ disorders requires a multidisciplinary treatment plan and I look forward to guiding you in the right direction with those providers as well as working on strengthening muscles of the face and jaw so that dysfunction and pain can decrease.
Can Myofunctional Therapy help adults?
Absolutely! Most of the patients I treat are adults.
When I treat children, I’m preventing problems later in life, but I’m helping my adult patients work through and correct the symptoms of their myofunctional disorders. Adults can get amazing results and can make life-changing progress. My goal is to help my adult patients live healthier and happier lives free from dysfunctions that cause serious health issues.
Is Therapy difficult?
Not at all! I strive to make therapy attainable for even the busiest of patients. If patients can practice their exercises for five minutes, twice a day, they will get excellent results. The exercises are simple and fun to do!
“The Mini Myo program helped our son finally sleep!”
MiniMyo Program
For my young patients 4 years old or younger, I have designed a program that will provide lasting results during pivotal growth and development years. This program allows families to work together with their young child in order to promote proper function in a less regimented treatment program. I typically see my Minis once per month depending on their abilities for 3 to 6 months. After functional techniques are practice, they can go on to the traditional Myofunctional Therapy Program if needed. The MiniMyo patients will also be directed to dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, Speech Therapists etc. depending on their needs to work towards ideal development and growth.

Habit Elimination
Certain oral habits can cause issues with facial growth and development as we age. Examples of these habits are:
• Prolonged pacifier or bottle use
• Thumb/ finger sucking
• Nail biting
• Lip licking or lip biting
• Tongue or cheek sucking
• Sucking on blankets, clothing
• Hair chewing
If any of these habits are practiced, they can have serious consequences on our facial growth and dentition. Often times, these habits cause narrow arches, crowded teeth, slow development of the lower jaw, and abnormal facial growth patterns.
I help my patients by working through a 30 day Habit Elimination Program that is focused on positive reinforcement, self awareness and accountability. I include this service in my 12 Session Therapy Program or my Mini Myo Program since these habits are often associated with other myofunctional disorders. Contact me today to learn more about how to eliminate your oral habit in as little as 30 days.
